His father is Paul Guez, Tunisian-born former head of "Guess" jeans. David evidently goes by his mother's maiden name, which is quite frequent in the entertainment business (e.g. Shelley Winters, Madeline Kahn, etc.)

After graduating from high school, he was spotted by a photographer and his modeling career took off.
